COUNTY COUNCIL MATTERS.

OCTOBER MEETING. Among ihe matters dealt with at this mouth’s meeting' of the Horowheuua County Councu were the following;— NOTICE AND DIRECTION BOARDS. ine Main Highways Board requested the Council to have notice boards erected on mam highways to indicate county boundaries. This would assist lorry drivers to comply with the regulations and would be lielplul to the traveller who was desirous of Knowing the name of the County in which he was travelling. The Board would subsidise the first cost of such a notice on a construction basis, and the subsequent cost of upkeep on a maintenance basis.—Received. The Manawatu Automobile Club stated it would provide sign boards for roads lacking the requisite signs, if the Council would undertake to erect same. A similar offer had been made to the Power Board so perhaps joint action might be taken.—Decided to accept the offer. WANDERING STOCK. Mr A. Ford, Waikanae, wrote stating the residents of Waikanae would be grateful to receive relief from the incessant nuisance of wandering stock, and suggesting the ranger make a surprise visit to the neighbourhood as the culprits seemed to anticipate the ranger’s visits and removed their stock from the roads until after his departure.—Referred to the Engineer, who will take the necessary steps towards prosecution of the culprits. AN OTAKI MATTER. W. M. Simcox, Otaki, said he had received permission some 18 years ago, to lav IS-inch drain pipes under the Otaki-Foxton Beach Road, but during the winter these had proved inadequate for the water coming from several hundreds of acres on the north side of the road. At the time of installing these drains there were about 35 chains of pipes, hut now there were, over 100 chains more of drains all leading into this main drain, with a correspondingly greater flow of water. The writer asked, on behalf of other ratepayers and owners besides himself, the Council to supply a two-foot pipe instead of the present 12-inch.— Referred to the Engineer and Cr. Ryder with power to act. VARIOUS MATTERS. Cr. Broadbelt said there was a necessity of putting either a surfaceman or the grader on some of the roads, but he favoured the .latter. Most of the metal was badly working itself off the roads almost as soon as it was put on. He asked the engineer whether the Kopuitaroa-Foxton road had received its full quota of expenditure, and, on being informed that such was the case, said he was disappointed as the road was in a bad state. He drew attention to the condition of Potts Road, Ihakara. which was badly cut up by large herds of cows’travelling over it.

After consideration had been given to the matter the Council resolved to leave Potts Road in the hands of Cr. Broadbelt and the Engineer. Cr. Whyte said a sum of £IBO had been on the Estimates for some years for Pretoria Road and he thought it was time it was expended. The same thing applied to one or two bridges. He asked whether when the tractor was obtained it could be sent to the Tokomaru .Riding, where he had been unable to obtain gear for the grader to- be used. The Engineer said it was no use doing anything to Pretoria Road until the weather improved. When the tractor arrived it would be sent to Tokomaru for a while for use with the grader until it was required for main highways work. COMMITTEES SET UP. The chairman, Cr. Monk, said that when the Main Highways work came on first, lie had suggested that it would become necessary to set up two committees—a finance committee end a works committee. The former had been in existence some time ago and it, was proposed to re-instate that cohmiittee. The time had arrived when they should have a works committee which could meet pnee a month and discuss matters and make inspections. The Council would feel, when this Committee brought forward, that they could deal with the business with more confidence because they would know that the committee had investigated it. Otherwise they were going to get into all-day - sittings of the Council. He moved tiiat the following committees be set up:— Works.—Crs. Catley, Barber, Bryant, Ryder and Jensen. Finance. —Crs. Monk, Broadbelt, Harkness and Wliyte. Cr. Harkness seconded the motion and said he felt sure the move was a wise one and would bear good fruit. Tire motion was carried.
