SLIP FALLS IN CUTTING.

MAIL AGENTS’ MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. The Secretary of the G.P.O. has received a message from the postmaster at Taumarunui as follows: “The postmaster at Ongarue reports that the mail train from Auckland ran into a slip in a cutting half a. mile south of Ongarue this morning. “The engine and postal van were derailed and three carriages- telescoped. “Six dead have been recovered .and thirty are injured. “Search is still being made in the debris and there may be more dead. “The mail .agents state the mail van and mails were damaged slightly. “A relief train with doctors and nurses has gone out from Taumiarunuli.”

The postmaster at Auckland reports: “The postal agent on the train .reports that, the express was' derailed at Ongarue about six a.m. The car was smtashed., and several others telescoped. • “The postal agents all had a miraculous escape. “There is great loss of life and many seriously injured among the passengers.”
