SHANNON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The monthly meeting of the Council el the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Council Chamber on Thursday evening. The president, Mr Gunning, presided'. CORRESPONDENCE. From Town Clerk, Shannon Borough Council, acknowledging receipt of letter recommending Council fo use their best endeavour to provide fox a swimming pool when the banking of Otauru stream is in progress end stating the matter will receive consideration at an early date. From Minister of Railways acknowledging receipt .of letter pointing out the lack of facilities for handling heavy goods lat the Shannon railway yards and stating he was obtaining a report in connection with the matter and will forward a reply as soon as this comes to hand; the same applies to the Council’s request' for increased accommodation at the Shannon railway station. From Director of Education, re appointing of male teachers at Shannon School, pointing out. that the appointment of teachers is placed by Statute in the hands of the Education Board and that the Minister of Education has therefore no right to interfere, but that so far as is reasonably possible the policy of the Education Department is to encourage the appointment of male teachers.—Decided to write Education Board. FLAX CULTURE. From Minister of Agriculture re application of the Flaxmillers’ Association for financial assistance in connection, with" the continuation of their experiments stating the matter is being investigated and that the Chambers’ representations will be borne in mind when the matter comes up for further consideration. It was decided that the secretary be instructed to. again write the Minister of Agriculture re the flax experiments being carried on at Shannon, giving him the information in respect of same that has come to the knowledge of the Chamber of Commerce and urging that the consideration of a Government subsidy be expedited. * A SEWERAGE SCHEME. Correspondence" was received from the Town Clerks of Raetihi and Taumaranui re particulars asked for cost of” installation, .of sewerage in those boroughs. Taumaranui stated their work was'completed in two parts, the first in 1919 at .ar cost of £3879, and the balance costing £8542. in 1920. In. Raetihi, the main part of the town is served, the outlet is a. large concrete septic tank situated by the river. The cost of the construction of the sewerage scheme was included with the construction of high pressure water service (pump, reservoir, water mains, fire plugs, etc.) The total cost was approximately £BB7O, the sewerage being first in operation, in 1919. - After discussion by the Chamber it was decided that the Borough Council he urged to obtain an estimate for drainage at an early date, (a) for the business or more thickly populated area, (b) for the whole Borough,. ROAD TO KOPUTAROA. Mr Gunning reported that petitions had been in circulation at Koputaroa and Buckley with a view to having the roadi completed from, Buckley to Koputaroa,. The petitions would be presented a.t the next meeting of the Horowhenua County Council. ’ The Chamber decided to write the County Council asking them to favourably consider the petitions from the ratepayers of .Buckley and Koputaroa asking for the completion of the ShannonKoputaroa road. The Chamber being I of the opinion, that the completion of J the road would be of great value to ■ the residents, also to Levin and Shan- j non Boroughs by shortening the. dis- ] tance between the two towns and providing an alternate route with saving in maintenance and also give a better grade than 1 the existing main county round. TAR-SEALED ROADS, A petition, from ratepayers of the Horowhenua County was placed before the Council asking the Horowhenua C.C. to tax-seal the -road from the Shannon, borough north boundary to the entrance to the Makerua station. Mr Tippler stated the road at present is In perfect order for tar-sealing and considered the work would soon pay lor itself by money saved in maintenance; also pointing out the time, is now favourable, and opportune.—The Chamber decided to support the petition. GENERAL. On the motion of Mr Tippler it was decided to urge the Borough. Council to set aside a place for open-air speakers, other than in the main streets, so as to avoid accidents and obstruction to .traffic.
