CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

A general meeting of the Chamber of Cojumeree wa* held at the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening for the purpose of confirming the by-m-ws and dealing with the registration of the Chamber. The president (Mr Cunning) occupied the chair, i After the by-laws had been read by i the secretary, it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Murphy, that the by-laws as read be confirmed. REGISTRATION OF CHAMBER. Mr Thwaites moved that the Shannon Chamber of Commerce be registered under the Unclassified Societies Act.—Carried. PUBLIC SWIMMING POOL,. Mr Beard said he thought now was an opportune time to approach the Public Workis Department, who are about to erect banks along the Otatiru stream, to make provision for a swimming pool for Shannon. He said at present there were no bathing pools in the vicinity of the town, and he thought 6ne could be made, at very little cost under this arrangement, and he felt that it would be much appreciated. Mr H. Seifert considered it would be very simple as it woul#' only mean letting in a, pool adjoining the bank, with an intake and at each end. Mr Beard moved trap it be a recommendation to the Borough Council to use their influence when erecting the proposed banks along the Otauru stream to have provision made for bathing accommodation.—Carried. SEWERAGE..

Mr H. A. Scott thought now wait, an opportune time for the Borough Council to consider a Sewerage scheme for Shannon, seeing thait the water scheme was about to be carried out, and that tar-sealed roads had been supported by different candidates, when standing for the Council. He considered it would be a, mistake not to do the work at the same time, as if left until afterwards it would have to be done at a much greater cost. At the present time 227 persons were paying 26s per year for sanitation fees, and if that, amount was capitalised ait. say 5 per cent., it would mean about £6OOO, which would go a long way towards the work and he felt sure ratepayers would . sooner pay the extra than put up with the existing conditions. It w.afe one of the first things required and they could not expect me town t.o progress until they had it. Mr Gunning said he agreed sewerage was most essential, but they had io remember that they were getting water and electric light and had to be cautious and consider the expense. At present a few shoulders had to cany the burden. If the place was .to go ahead they must have sewerage and he felt sure it would come at no distant date.

Mr Seifert suggested writing to Chambers of towns of similar size to Shannon, who had installed sewerage, enquiring tile cost. • Mr Murray said he thought the Borough Council .would ask the Engineer to bring down an estimate for sewerage before anything was done with laying down the water.

On the motion, of Mr Thwaiites it was the secretary write the boroughs of Ohakune, Raefihu and Taumarunhli to ascertain if they have installed isewerage, at what cost and what year instaJled. Also that the Shannon Borough Council he written to .as to the advisability of installing sewerage when putting down the water scheme. REP. FOOTBALL MATCHES.

Mr Beard drew attention to what ho considered the unfair advantage taken by the Horowhenua Rugby Union in centralising all the representative football matches at Levin. Shannon in the past had shown that it could command ai good gate and he understood Foxton had guaranteed a £25 gate and he thought these town* should have been considered. He thought in the interests of the town and football the Chamber should assist the local club *o have the resolution rescinded. The members present were unanimously in accord with the speaker’s suggestion.

Mr Murraiy then moved.: “That this Chamber deplore the action of the Horowhenua, Rugby Union in voting that all rep. matches be held in Levin, seeing that Shannon was so successful iTip.ncially and otherwise in the past and in the best interest of the sport, respectfully ask the Rugby Union to reconsider their decision.”—Carried. It wais also decided that a copy of the resolution be forwarded to the Levin, Foxton and Otaki Chambers asking for their co-operation.
