NEWS OF THE DAY.

The banks in Timaru keep holiday on Friday next, St. Andrew’s Day.

Owing to a quorum of members not attending last evening, the meeting of the Wtiimatuitai School.. Committee stands' further adjourned.

Yesterday at the Magistrate’s Court, Waimate, before Mr W. Coltman, J.P., a resident at Waitaki north pleaded guilty to having been drunk whilst in charge of a horse and trap, and was fined £l.

The first wool sale of the Timaru series, which opens on Friday morning at the Theatre Royal, is already creating much interest. The catalogues close to-day. Many of those interested were among the wool at the various stores yesterday, and to-day and to-morrow will be busy days therein. Unfortunately for all interested the Home markets are at present quiet, and there is change for the better within sight. The Christchurch sales last week showed that prices were on a par with Home rates, and auctioneers here anticipate that if the same state of affairs obtain here on Friday but little of the wool catalogued will be held over.

The late floods in the Opihi river, by changing the channel', left a pool a few chains long under the southern end of the Main road bridge, and this we hear, is full of trout, many of them large ones. The pool is likely to become dry as the river falls, and there will be a groat mortality among the fish, unless they are removed. Fishermen and poachers are doing something in this way now, but they cannot catch more than a lithe of the imprisoned fish. The Acclimatisation Society should at once send their ranger with his net, and remove the fish to the main stream which is but a few yards array.

An Ancient Belief.—The ancients believed that rheumatism was the work of a demon within a man. Any one who has had an attack of sciatic or inflammatory rheumatism will agree that the infliction is demoniac enough to warrant the belief. It has never been claimed that Chamberlain’s Pain Balm will cast out demons, but it will cure rheumatism, and hundreds bear testimony to the truth of this statement. ■ One application relieves the pain, and this quick relief which it affords is alone worth many times its cost. For sale by Canterbury Farmers’ Co-opicralive Association (Ld.).

We heard yestsrdnv with regret of the death of Mr Win. Kelland, sheeprfarmer, of Orton, Rangitata (who until about two years ago lived at Cannington, near Cave). He had been ailing for come time from heart disease, but for a few days before his death had been much better. On Monday he started to drive his daughter to Temuka, and had not reached his gate when he fell from his seat to the floor of the vehicle, and expired in a few minutes. Deceased was a son of the late Mr John Kelland, and brother of Messrs R. and E. Kelland, of Timaru Downs. The family will have the sincere sympathy of a wide circle of friends.

By advertisement elsewhere Messrs Cooper and Macdermott intimate that they are in no way connected with any other company which have preceded them. They find this necessary, owing to an exhibition by a company with a somewhat similar name obtaining for the kinematograph less popularity than it deserves, and as the company opening here next Friday has given entire satisfaction in the largest theatres from Auckland to the Bluff, they solicit the patronage of a Timaru audience. The “ Southland Times,” reporting the disprlay in the Theatre Royal, Invercargill, says : “It was anticipated that the disappointing exhibition of a recent kinematograpffi would seriously affect the attendance at this entertainment, but happily these fears were not realised, and it is a pleasure to be able to say that the spectators were quite satisfied with the performance. The entertainment is a most enjoyable one.”
