THE PACIFIC CABLE. MELBOURNE, November 26. “The Postmaster-General states that the Telegraph Construction Company’s tender for the Pacific cable is £1,795,000, and that (he estimated cost of insulation and survey is £204,000,. making u total of £1,999,-
000. The cable is to be completed by July Ist, 1902. The company undertake to lay it within that time if allowed to begin with the Fiji to Norfolk Island section ; then the Norfolk Island to Australia and New Zealand section, finishing within the Vancouver section. MARITIME CONFERENCE. An important conference of representor tives, steamship owners, and steamer associations, a sequel to the recent maritime trouble in Sydney, has opened, and is discussing the demands of the seamen, firemen and trimmers for an increase of wages from £6 10s to £7 a month, overtime rate to be Is 6d per hour; hours of labour in port to be from 7 to 5 p.m., with two hours for meals and certain concessions on holidays.
