FAREWELL TO LIEUTENANT CRAWSHAW.
Colonel Bailey yesterday received the following telegram from Colonel PolePenton :—“ Send Lieut. Orawshaw up at once ; wire when he is leaving.” Lieutenant Orawshaw will leave Timaru by the express train this evening on his way to Wellington. A hurredly got up and necessarily informal meeting of the officers of the garrison to bid farewell to Lieutenant Orawshaw was held at the Grosvenor Hotel last evening. Major Jowsey occupied the chair and Captain Jackson the vice-chair. The health of the guest of the evening (Was proposed by the chairman, and spoken to by most of those present. The various speakers congratulated Mr Orawshaw on his good fortune on being selected, and expressed the opinion that he would do credit to himself and to the district. Mr Orawahaw briefly and feelingly replied. Mr Orawshaw leaves for Oamaru by the first train this morning to say farewell to his relations, and returns north by the express. Though a young officer he has had a varied experience which should stand him in good stead. He has been in the I Battery, the North Otago Mounted Rifles, the Timaru Rifles, and the Timaru City Rifles. He will be a great loss to his present company, but they all heartily congratulate him on his appointment, and wish him Godspeed. '
A monster mass meeting is to be held at Waimate on Tuesday evening next in connection with the Patriotic Fund for Waimate County and Borough. It should be very largely attended. Privates Finch and Reidy, of the City Rifles, anil Private Lillburn, left by the express train last evening for the camp at Wellington. There was a large crowd to see them away, and cheers were very heartily given as the train moved oti. Among the officers present to bid them farewell were Captain Gillies and Lieut. Orawshaw, of the City Rifles, Captain and Adjutant Bourn, Lieut. Raymond and others. The send-off was partied-, larly hearty.
