PRESENTATION.
At the Police Station this afternoon a a presentation was made to SergeantMajor McDonald by the members of the police force intheTimaru sub-district,on the eve of his departure, on transfer, to the charge of the Hokitika district. The presentation was made by Detective .Livingstone on behalf of the subscribers, and the soveuirs presented were a handsome silver-mounted neavy Malacca walking cane, to be suitably inscribed, and a silver-mounted briarwood pipe. Detective Livingstone expressed the regret of the men at the exchange of their superior officer after his five years’ residence in Timaru, and their best wishes for the future of himself and family. Constables Crawford and Beddek endorsed the remarks of Detective Livingstone. SergeantrMajor McDonald suitably replied, and in acknowledging the compliment paid him in the presentation he spoke very highly of the members of the police force in South Canterbury as willing and excellent officers ; he only hoped he would have as good men to deal with on the West Coast. The toast of health and prosperity to the Sergt-Major and his family was drunk in modest beverages, with best wishes for their future career. bergt.-Major McDonald and his family leave for Hokitika by the steamer Omapere on Friday,
