The following is the result of the draw for the first round of the draughts championship of South Canterbury : —Messrs Beck meets O’Byrne, Stokes meets Lee, Stewart meets Sim. The Fairlie School Committee met on Wednesday last. There were present— Messrs Gillingham (in the chair), Braddick, Doyle, Comrie, Kiddle, Gilrhour,' and Watson. The visitors reported that the contractor for the porch had finished his work satisfactorily, and recommended that the Board be applied to for payment of the grant in aid of same. The headmaster’s monthly report showed that the average attendance had been—boys, 57 ; girls, 37 ; total, 94. On the rolls, 120. He furnished a list of pupils who had attended irregularly. A circular was received from the School Committee Conference, concerning the business to be done at the annual meeting. The Fairlie Band of Hope Union wrote, asking for the use of the schoolroom one evening each month. It was decided to grant the application, the charge to be Is per meeting. Mr Gow’s inspection report was laid before the committee. The inspector’s remarks on the method, order and discipline, were considered unsatisfactory, and it was resolved on the motion of Messrs Doyle and Comrie —“ That Mr Auld, the headmaster, be requested to interview the committee with reference to the report.” Messrs Gilmour and Comrie were re-ap-pointed visitors for the ensuing month.
