WELLINGTON REGATTA.

(By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON, January 22. When the boats in the first and second class yacht races started there was a dead calm and the boats lay almost motionless off the starting point. In about half-an-hour, however, a fresh southerly breeze sprang up and the boats

were soon off at a fair pace. For the first class championship, the Lyttelton yacht Pastime is leading, with WaitangJ second and Mascotte third. 1.51 p.m.

On the beat to the entrance of the harbour the new yacht Waitangi exhibited splendid pace and overhauling the Pastime assumed a strong lead, Mascotte also coming up and passing Pastime, There is still a fine steady breeze and if it lasts the Waitangi is almost sure to improve her position and win easily. In the second-class race the Napier yacht Atlanta has a good lead, Isca second.
