NEWS OF THE DAY.

The usual weekly executive meeting of the New Zealand Workers’ Union was held at the head office, Waimate,on Saturday. Mr Brown was in the chair. Correspondence was received from Mr J. W. Kelly, respecting the establishment of a branch at Dunedin; from the Hon. Major Steward about the Employers Liability Act; and from the Government Labour Department, regarding registration under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act. The secretary was instructed to take the necessary steps in connection with this matter. From the secretary of the Gore branch, intimating that at a recent meeting of the Gore Farmers’ Club it was decided to reduce wages during the coming harvesting and threshing seasons. The secretary was instructed to warn workers not to crowd into the said district during the seasons mentioned. Correspondence was received from the branches at Dunedin, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough, Christchurch, Winton and Tapanui, reporting progress. After dealing with a large amount of correspondence from various station representatives the meeting ended.
