Briggs took 5 wickets for 34, and Lockwood 4 for 37. When the Australians wont in, Lyons and Bannerman scored steadily for a while off Mold and Lockwood, but upon Briggs replacing the former a rot set in and play was of the feeblest description. Lyons succumbed to the Lancashire professional's third ball. Trott began recklessly and knocked a ball into his wicket. Graham only lasted for four balls. Bruce played steadily, but the remainder, except Blaokham, gave a wretched exhibition. The bowling and fielding of the Englishmen were excellent, especially McGregor’s wicket-keeping. The Sporting Life says the Colonials missed six catches and lost a number of chances owing to slovenly fielding. The Morning Leader, however, praises Graham for his brilliant fielding. (Received 11.15 a.m., August 16th.) Jackson and Read scored freely off Turner and Trumble, but Giffen bowled with good effect. He dismissed Read and Briggs with successive balls and caught» Lockwood with one hand from a hard return. Jackson made one huge drive over the roof of the pavilion. There were 13 fours in hia score. The innings lasted seven hours and a quarter.
