South Canterbury Times TUESDAY, AUGUST 15, 1893. NEWS OF THE DAY.

The town clerk stated last night that the claim for rent of the BaincliS reserve not having been paid by the manager in due time, the claim was sent to the Ohristoburoh agents of the lessee, they sent a cheque, and the manager also sent a cheque, bo that the claim had been twice paid. Unfortunately they could not keep both of the cheques. Mr E. H, Lough, the town clerk, last night said that after reading the Borough Council's minutes and correspondence for five and twenty years, without such aid, he had at last to confess that he must use spectacles, and be put a pair on. The Councillors applauded—a novel way of expresnng sympathy. There was a large attendance of members of the Tourist Cycling Club at the railway station last evening to give Mr C Hail a good send off on his way to Sydney. Everyone wished him and the other members of the Hew Zealand team of cyclists, the greatest success, and as the train moved away hearty cheers were given for Hall. We learn that; on arrival the team will have about sixteen . days to train in and got used to the climate of Australia, so that they will, seeing that they are now fairly fit, meat the cbsmoions of the other side on excellent terms. The chief races will be held on a grass track, which will suit the tloath Canterbury representative admirably.
