CORRESPONDENCE

CAROLINE BAY.

[to the kditoe] Sib,—On reading the report of the last meeting of the Harbour Board, I was surprised to observe that some of the members proposed depositing the silt in Caroline Bay. 1 have been expecting to see your columns inundated with Utters, protesting against the proposal, both on sanitary grounds aud because depositing the silt in the bay would destroy one of our great health resorts. I should have thought it was the duty of the Harbour Board to protect the bay from any impurity being lodged there. The odcur from the silt when lifted from the harbour is not the mildest of perfumes. Some time back when the late Board were de ositing the silt in the bay, it was pointed out that not only was it spoiling the bay for sea bathing, but was killing or driving a nay the fish The Board therefore took the silt out to the Dashing Books. We bad also to appeal to our civio fathers to protect the be„cb from the shore end, and they kindly passed by-laws to prevent any nuisance. It is unfortunate (hat their authority does not extend seaward further as we could get them to sit on the proposal. I trust that you will use your pen in protesting against the proposal, and would suggest that a petition be drawn up to be presented to the Board ac their next meeting, pointing out the i jus tice which they purpose doing to a large section of the communi y V*’e have visitors from all parts of New Zealand coming herein summ-.r for the sea bathing the Chairman and his followers caonot. have been on the beach on any holiday and seen the numbers of children as well as adults enjoying the bathing and the sands, or the proposal to discharge the filthy silt into the bay would not have been made. Z am, etc , JRatbpayeb.
