LAND.

(Pbb Pbesb Association.)

(Received noon, July 23rd.) Brisbane, July" 22.

The return match between Queensland and the New Zealand Rugby Union team was played to-day. The was very warm. About 7000 people were present. The teams were:— New Zealand.—Pull back—Wilson ; three-quarter-backs Gage, Wynyard, and Jervis ; half-aacka—Rutland and Bayley; forwards —McKenzie, Mclntosh, Ellison, Lambie, Oockroft, Stuart, Hiroa, Speight, and Murray. Queensland. —Full back—Paul; three* quarter-backs—O’Shea, Warbrick, and McGowan ; half-backs —‘Allman, and Grattan; forwards—Robertson, Meade, Woods, Munro, Talywyn, Lyons, Patterson, Conndel, and Tula.

The New Zealanders won the toss. Wilson returned the kick off Murray* Ellison following up took the ball into the home 25. O’Shea, however, came to the rescue, and cutting through the opposing forwards sailed straight for the line, but Jervis capsized him. The play was confined to the centre of the field, and then Rutland fired the ball across to Lambie, who with a fine run carried the aceneof

play well into Queensland territory, bat further approach was checked by a pass forward. The visitors kept up the attack and were pressing the local men bard until their forwards got oa a fine rush and kept it going merrily until Bui* land fell on the leather and a serum resulted. From this McKenzie, after gaining possession, ran for the line and then passed to Jervis who made a brilliant attempt to score, but was stopped by the local full back. After some give and take play Butland and Bayley were prominent in an attack on the goal line, and then Cockroft, Murray, and Lambie swooped down, and although they got the leather across the line by hard kicking, Queens* land was forced. On resuming the Whites set up a rush which was stopped by the visiting three-quarters, and Allman passed to O’Shea who was grassed by Jervis. At this time the game was fairly fast. Wynyard, intercepting a pass, dashed through the Queensland backs and scored a try between the posts, from which Ellison had no difficulty in placing a goal. Wilson again returned the kick out and the for* wards getting well down had the Whites in trouble, when McKenzie with a fine run took the bail down to the full buck who stopped any further advance. The Blacks were playing a hard and fast game and the local backs had all they knew to keep the invaders out of their 25. Lambie and Cockroft, who were continually breaking through the forwards, headed a fine rush which Warbrick stopped and kicked into touch. From the line out Ellison passed to Bayley, who seeing no chance of getting in handed the leather over to Jervis who potted a fine goal. A series of scrums at

the half distance was followed by a fine Black rush which ended in Jervis forcing Queensland down with a long kick. The local men were now working hard to get on terms with the Maorilanders, and McGowan again got on a good rush, when Wyyard again intercepted the pass and the game returned to the opposite end of the field where the home team were sorely pressed. Eventually Woods re-

lieved the danger, but Mclntosh marked at the half way flag and Wilson made a (fine though unsuccessful attempt at goal. On play resuming Cockroft headed a rush over the line which ended in a touch in goal. From a nice piece of passing from Butland on to McKenzie, and thence to Wynyard, the latter ran in at the corner but Wilson failed in the kick at goal. For the remainder of the first spell the game was confined to local territory. No sooner had Lambie kicked off than Yaldwyn came down the field with a strong run, and being ably supported by the local forwards, was near the New Zealand line when Wynyard checked him. Hiroa removed the danger for a time with a serviceable run, and after an exchange ef kicks between the backs, Ellison and Batland carried the ball down to the local 25. The Queenslanders cleared their line for a time, and then Jervis again came at them, and a scrum being formed in

Queensland quarters Ellison passed to Wynyard, who, with a dashing run, scored

a try, from which Ellison placed a good

goal. The ball then went into touch. From the line out McKenzie broke

through, and passing to Lambie, the latter carried it on for a few yards.

eventually slipping it across to Cockroft, who scored. Ellison was again entrusted with the kick, but made a poor attempt. Wynyard fumbled the kick-off, but Jervis

relieved his side, and Butland made a magnificent run, passing all hia opponents

but Paul, at full back. A scrum resulted

and the ball being heeled out to Bayley he sent it across to Butland, who dashed in under the posts. Ellison scored the major point. Yaldwyn was the first to

make play on the game resuming, and

with a fine run was well in the visitors’

quarters when Jervis brought his advance

to an abrupt end. Wynyard then snapped up the ball, and Jervis getting a neat pass whipped over the line. Ellison

scored a goal. McGowan following up the kick off got on a fine run which

McKenzie and Macintosh stopped, bnt O’Shea with a dodgy run invaded the

New Zealand line. Wilson stopped him,

and handing the ball over to Wynyard

and Bayley the pair with a passing rush were right inside the Queensland 25 in a

twinkling, when they entrusted the ball to McKenzie who scored a try at the

corner post, Wilsonmade a good attempt

at goal. After some fast play Mnnro got

away but was downed by Murray, bnt for an infringement of the rules Queensland was awarded a free kick, and McGowan

had an unsuccessful-shot at goal. From

the line out Ellison passed to Rutland, who sent it on to Wynyard, thence to Gage, and v _ the latter potted a goal, but unfortunately the ball - hit McCowane’s finger and the score was disallowed. On resuming the Blacks came down the field In fine style with a loose rush and Lambie passing to McIntosh, the latter shot it over to Rutland who scored a try from which Wilson kicked a poster. A little later on Jervis missed a fine chance to score through over-running the ball and time was called. Wynyard scored three tries from which two goals were kicked; Rutland scored two tries from which one goal was scored; Jervis potted a goal and scored a try, and both McKenzie and Cookroft scored a try each. The game Zealand, 05 points; Queensland/ntT.
