The Times says that the experiments on a large scale in Australia, towards a solution of the labour problem, have done the world a great service. (Received 11.15 p.m., July 19th.

Miss Shaw, travelling correspondent of the Times, in reviewing the four great strikes in Australia, emphasises the limitation of unionism, and states that prominent Labour leaders, speaking of the maritime strike, assured her that the day of strikes was over, and predicted a general decline.

DUNEDIN, July 19

The Premier, replying to the Mayor’s telegram re the unemployed, says that the present expenditure on public works being beyond the limit governing our proposed ex penditure for the year, at a time snob as this, and during the winter months, the local bodies and private enterprise should if possible come to the rescue. The Government are doing their level best, hut cannot end should not be expected to do that which is impossible.
