South Canterbury Times. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1892. NEWS OF THE DAY.

Miss Amy Vaughan and her talented Burlesque Pantomine Company open here this evening in “ J ittlo 'Bill,” a nautica l pantomine. and to-morrow evening give "Little Monte Christo,” burlesques written especially for the company. No doubt the elder Timaru theatre-goers will be pleased to renew their acquaintance with the timehonoured pantomine and the indispensable clown, and to give their youngsters a chance of enjoying them. The transformation scenes are exceptionally good, and are the work of the well known scenic artist, Mr Neville Thornton. The company is a very strong one both in quality and numbers, and Miss Vaughan has been at considerable expense and trouble in securing the best burlesque actors obtainable iu the Australian colonies. The clown will be most ably represented by Mr Max Hinkle who is considered to be one of the most finished perfomers in his line of profession. Taking into consideration that it is now many years since Timaru was visited by a company of this class, no doubt they wiU bo greeted with crowded houses. That they are worthy of patronage the excellent notices in the Dnnedin papers assure us. J. Parr, of the Timaru High School has gained the Engineering Entrance Exhibition at Canterbury College, ££o per annum, tenable for two years. One exhibition is offered each year, open for competition to candidates from any part of the colony; it is awarded on the results of the university junior scholarship papers, together with a special examination in freehand and model drawing, practical, plane and solid geometry, and survey-plotting. The installation social in connection with the Victoria Lodge, No. 19, 1.0 O.P. came off on Thursday night last ia the Oddfellows’ hall, Geraldine. Notwithstanding the unsociable character of the weather there was a large company present, many journeying from Fairlie Creek, Temuka, and Orari. Messrs Hullen Bros., of Waitobi, supplied the music, and Mrs Eiohardson, of Orari, acted as MO. most efficiently. During the evening Messrs Pye, of Fairlie Creek, and Messrs Nicholas, E!roon and King, sang several songs which were greatly appreciated. Dancing was kept up till 3 o’clock in the morning. The committee have to be congratulated on the success of their efforts to keep up the popularity of the socials connected with the Victoria Lpdge, each one carrying out the part allotted him tp the best of bis ability.
