Yesterday when stud sheep only were offered, though the attendance was large, bidding was alow even for first class animals, and commoner sheep were entirely neglected. The highest prices were 43 and 41 guineas for two rams from the studs of Mathew Holmes, Canterbury, and Fred Sutton, Southland. Beid’s averaged £l4 8s 9d, Fred Sutton’s £l4 8s lid, J. B. Sutton’s £9 9s, Mathew Holmes’ £lB 18s. Down and Marsh sheep brought low prices. At (he sale of flock rams to-day there was much more animation and averages were made by all the leading breeders, everything being quitted. A verdict of death from failure of the heart’s action whilst under chloroform was returned, the jury adding that all necessary medical precautions had bren taken to ascertain the condition of the deceased, but that restorative measures were left untried. The Public Library Association to-day decided to institute a system of canvass for subscriptions to secure a public library. A number of the unemployed have returned from the Otago central works dissatisfied with ' , the measurement of the works.
