Timaru High School.

An ordinary meeting of the Timoru High ! School Board of Governors was held last evening. Present s Messrs S. W, Goldsmith (in the chair), W. M. Sims, D. M. Boss, W. Ziesler, and W. Priest Owing to the small ness of the meeting it was agreed to postpone the transaction of business till next month. The departmental report on secondary schools was laid on the (able. The committee on the master’s residence, who were to have reported at this meeting, asked for further time, as they had not yet met to consider the matter. The headmaster’s report was read as follows : “ The school ro opened on Tuesday ; there are ten new pupils, but a few more are expected, and it is still uncertain how many are coming bock ; I am not, therefore, in a position to state what the roll will be for this term. “ The full report of the examiners, together with copies of the papers set, lists of classes and marls, have been laid before you. “ Maud Lawrell, who stood first on the December examination for the Cain Exhibition, has elected to take the Exhibition. “ Maud Lowrell also gained this year the 19lh place among ‘those who passed with credit ’ the University Junior Scholarship Examination (29th on the list) Last year she was 70th. Two other candidates, J. Parr and J H. Yon Haast, passed for matricula* lion on the same examination. “ In the scholarship examinations held by the Board of Education two of the three senior scholarships awarded were gained by pupils of this school, and our two other candidates gained the marks necessary to qualify for scholarships. Owing presumably to lack of funds, the latter were not awarded scholarships. It is certainly a hardship that pupils who have had two years’ High School education, and have proved themselves worthy of having it continued, should not have the chance that senior scholarships would give them. '* There are also several candidates for tho Education Board's junior scholarships (open to primary schools) who have qualified in a like manner. Had the Board of Education been a position to award scholarships to all qualified candidates, the latter would in accordance with custom have received free education here. It is the custom in several other places, e.g , Christchurch and Dunedin, for tie High School Boards either to grant free education to all who qualify for scholarships or to give a certain number of exhibitions (amounting to the fees) to those who stand next to the scholarship winners and obtain not less than 50 per cent, of the marks. No extra expense would bo entailed hero, and I would suggest that no better time than the present could be found for each an act of grace. The number likely to avail themselves of the privilege in question would be about four or five. The currency of the exhibition should be the same as that of the scholarships, two years. If the board can see its way to such a concession, I think the Board of Education might reasonably be asked to admit these exhibitioners to fature scholarship examinations on the same terms as if they were holders of Education Board scholar ships. The secretary stated that a resolution from tho Board of Education, requesting this very J thing, would have been laid before the Board ) had it not decided to postpone all business.

It was proposed by Mr Ziesler, seconded by Mr Sims, and carried—" That this Board record a hearty vote of thanks to Dr Thomas for his gratuitous reiviees in connection with the ambulance class at the High School.” Accounts amounting to £4O 8s 6d were passed for payment, and tho Board adjourned to the first Thursday in March.
