THIS DAY. (Pie Ehotrio Telegraph—Copy kiq k r.) [Per Press Association.] (Received 10.20 a.m., Feb. 4th.) THE FASTING MAN. London, Feb. 3. Sued, the faster, accompanied by a German mesmerist, will visit Australia shortly. THE WRECK OF THE EIDER. Great difficulty was experienced in rescuing the crew of the steamship Eider on account of the furious gale raging at the time. The ship has become a total wreck. It is supposed that the officersconfounded the Needles light with Huratoastle light. THE CONGREGATIONAL UNION. The Rev. Mr Woods, of Clapton, has been appointed secretary to the Congregational Union in place of Dr Hannay. H.M.S. VICTORIA. H.M.S. Victoria has been lightened to the extent of 1500 tons and the efforts of the tugs have succeeded in moving her half a length. It is hoped that she will be floated off to-day. THE MARQUIS OF SALISBURY’S SPEECH. Lord Salisoury, in his speech at Exeter Hall, referring to the condition of the agricultural labourers said that at present no Government could afford to propose to supplement the provision for old age. Experiments would be very risky.
