Extension of the Borough.
*• Suburban," in a letter to the Timaru Herald, replies to the question why the suburban residents do not petition to be joined to the borough. Ho says First, we are somewhat doubtful of the effects of such a' change upon our pockets, the popularly accepted notion being that our rates would be considerably enhanced without our benefits and privileges being commensurately increased. Secondly, as a matter of fact we cannot discern, except in the mere populous parts of the town, any great difference between city and suburbs, ibere is the same dearth of footpaths, the same characteristics of shingle and mud, tbs same green stagnant pools occupy our side channels, the self same open sewers meander sweetly adown our respective gullies, the smells are not without risk to be classified as No. 1 and No. 2, The adornment of our park lands is wonderfully similar. One can almost recognise the same brand of kerosene and jam tins, and the savory corpses of domestic pats are of the same order of the feline or canine family. It therefore remains for you and those who advocate the change to show where n we shall benefit by it, for that is the only way it will be looked at in this sadly mercenary, age, It is true, as you say, the Levels Boad Board counts for nothing, except to draw oar ratesand spend the money upon country roadr. The liberality of country boards to .town residents is proverbial. Still the question remains—ls it not better to throw away 61 than to spend Is 6d for nothing ? Surely we save Is by the former transaction. What wo want is to be educated up to the idea, and to begin with I would suggest to you progressionists and reformers (hat you should lay before us in a concise and plain form a statement of the benefits (to us) to be derived from casting in our lot with the Borough of Timaru.
