FOOTBALL.
The match between tbe Waihi Second Fifteen and the Colonial Football Club took place yesterday afternoon on the athletic ground. As it was raining hard a proposal was made to postpone tbe match, but as the visitors had taken the trouble to drive all the way from Geraldine the Colonials decided to meet them, and both teams took the field at 3.45 p.m. The ground was in a very sloppy state, and rain fell throughout the match, which it was agreed to play in two 35 minute spells. Waihi kicked off, the Colonials defending the western goal. The ball was well returned, and the local men quickly encroached on their opponent’s line. Fast play was the rule, and tight scrums were interspersed with free kicks for Waihi, thus making the game a little open. Just on the call of half time Hooper got hold of the ball, and a short run saw him get over close to the corner. The angle for goal was a difficult one, and Hooper, though ho tried hard, failed to add to the score. In tbe second spell the tables were turned, the Waihi men pressing the Colonials very hard in their territory, but all efforts to break through the local men’s defence wore futile, and on the whistle sounding no side, the Colonials were left the victors by one point (the try named). For them Thompson (captain), Boys brothers (2), Bilton'and Bard played, a sterling game; while for the visitors Hart, Morrison, Brinkman, and the Moore brothers (2), did exceptionally good work. After the match the Waihi team were entertained at dinner at the Club Hotel, by their opponents, the health of the visiting team being very suitably proposed by Mr George Thompson. Mr Morrison cordially thanked the proposer on behalf of Waihi, and returned the compliment by proposing success to the Colonials. Both toasts were duly honoured, and a sub 1 stantial repast having been thoroughly discussed, and a few good songs listened .to, the visitors left for home about 9 o’clock.
