THE NEW ROLLS.

[to the editor. ]

Sib. —Does the alteration of boundaries make a difference to the residential qualification of electors ? For instance, in the case of a man registered within the old boundaries of Gladstone and now in Timaru district, is it necessary for him to register in the Timaru district, he having only a residential qualification or is the old roll revised ? I am etc., A Elector.

[The law requires the Registrar of each district to form a new roll from the old ones, within thirty days of the completion and publication of the Report fixing the new boundaries, and to give notice in the Gazftte that the new roll is formed. The new roll may be added to at any time before the issue of a writ or order for a new election. It is easy to see that there will be difficulties in the way of a registrar, say of Timaru, getting all the “ residential ” properly transferred. The simplest way perhaps is for each to wait until the notice is given that the roll is completed as far as the Registrar can make it so, and then inquire if his name is on the roll. The chief difficulty will probably bo in the case of those who gave vague addresses in registering before, so that the registrar cannot tell on which side of the new dividing line the elector lives. The old rolls are easily available and anyone can tell pretty well whether'his address given therein is likely to give any trouble of that kind, and if so he had better obtain a registration form and send it in. They go free by post. It might be well too to give the number on the old roll.—Ed. S.O.T.]
