Regarding the statement in the London Standard, re the Bank of New Zealand, the bank authorities say that the Standard's assertion is purely imaginative. The bank never asked for assistance from the Government. The statements appearing in the London papers are really idle speculations. A young man named William Ryan, while employed cutting logs at Tiki, Coromandel, was struck by a rolling boulder and killed.

Dr Saunders and Constable Browne, who left town on Friday to join the police party at Woitotara who are proceeding to the spot where the supposed murdered Maori woman was buried, returned to Wanganui this pyening. Ihe party bad a very rough time

of it owing to the precipitous nature of the country. They reached the spot on Saturday night, and the body was exhumed next day, the party returning to Waitotara on Monday evening completely tired out. The result of the post mortem is not known as the police are very reticent.

A largo meeting of over 200 settlers was held at Stratford on Tuesday, to which several M.H Rs , including the Premier, had been invited. At the Resident Magistrates Court G. H. Chamberlain was committed to ths Supremo Court for entering a shop and stealing the goods. He was caught in the shop at 4 o’clock this morning. Accused is an old offender and once made a sensational escape with a man named Levy. For the past nine years he has been carrying on business and was supposed to have given up his old habits. He is over sixty years of age, and was supposed to have been associated in the early days with the Burgess gang.

DUNEDIN, June 38.

At a special meeting of the High School Board of Governors, the position of matron for the Girls’ High School, for which there were 19 applicants, was conferred on Mrs Elizabeth Boss Mackay, of Christchurch. In the Supreme Court to-day, tho cases of Reid v. Gelliand, and Smith v- Gelliand were commenced. Tho defendant in these actions was one of the persons who were some years ago alleged to have acted as dummies for the firm of James Smith and Sons in the acquisition of lands at Waitahuna west. At the dummyism enquiry the charges were not substantiated. The first case involved the possession of a section which Gelliand applied for and obtained in 1882, and Gelliand swore that the evidence ho gave at tho inquiry before the land board was arranged beforehand by J. Smith, one of the firm and himself, and was not true. Tho cases were not decided.
