A second, charged also with disorderly conduct in Beswick Street, shouting at and about the Salvation Army, and fa-tber with damaging S an utensilS injjj the lock-up, pleaded ignorance of damage done and tried to extenuate the charge of disorder. Fined 10s and ordered to pay for the damage done and Is maintenance. LARCENY. Samuel Gabriel or ,Gabriel Beid pleaded not guilty 1j a charge of stealing from a hut at Geraldine on May 29th, a suit of clothes value £4, the property of Charles Burnett. The prosecutor stated that he met the recused one day last month and they camped together one night and agreed to seek work together. They went towards Geraldine and got one day’s work. They were then by permission staying in a hut belonging to Mr Mackenzie. After the day’s work they were in Geraldine, and prisoner seemed determined to spend the few gshillings ho had earned in drink, so he told him if he did he would go no fuither with him. Prisoner then appeared to have slipped away to the hut, put off hia old clothes and put on prosecutor’s best spare suit including shirt and boots, leaving his old clothes there. Prisoner, or someone, went to the hut a day or two later and fetched the old clothes away. He saw no more of the prisoner till Saturday, when be happened to see him in Timaru, wearing the stolen suit. Ho gave information to Constable Tarrant in tho street, and that officer arrested tho man. The prisoner, the constable stated, when he saw prosecutor speaking t j him at once made of, and he had a bit of a run after him. Prisoner elected to be dealt with summarily, and said something in a confused away about the clothes being lent to him, but prosecutor denied this- -it was not likely he would lend his best suit.

The Bench held the charge fully proved and sentenced the prisoner to two months with hard labour. Tho suit to be returned to ths owner. (The prisoner appeared in Court in old clothes lent by the police.)
