THE TIMARU INFANT SCHOOL.

[to the editor.]

Sib,—-I notice in your report of the proceedings of the South Canterbury Board of Education that the Timaru School Committee, reporting upon the infant school there, ask for information respecting the contractor and the architect who passed the work. lam able to give the desired information which is as follows:—The infant school was built in 1876, N. Murphy was the contractor, Mr Blackmore the clerk of works, and myself the architect. At that time I held the responsible and important position of architect to-the Provincial Government of Canterbury, was well paid for my services and well supported, and had no need to descend to paltry means to make my living. I trust that you will give publicity to my letter, as the aspersions made by the committee of Timaru are most unjust. More than that I require of them that they take an early opportunity of withdrawing their insinuations about what they call a “swindle.’’ The ridges of the school were specified to be in wood and were so executed. It was then the usual course of such work, I cannot toll what colour they were then painted or what colour since, as it is now fourteen years ago. I indignantly resent the inferences of the committee. I. am, &0., 'Thomas Cane, Architect. i, Grain Agency Buildings, Christchurch, June 10, 1890.
