Waimate County Council.

A meeting of the Waimate County Council was held yesterday* There were present— Mr McLaren (in the chair), and councillors Milae, Murphy, Oliver, Manchester, Hardie and Macpherson. The following correspondence was read and considered: — From Messrs F. Slee and B. H. Rhodes, resigning their seats on the Council. —It was resolved that Messrs Rhodes and tilee’s resignation] as members of this council be accepted, and that the Returning Officer be instructed to take the necessary steps to have the vacancies filled before next meeting of the Council. From B. Foster, Sheep Inspector, asking permission to erect a gate upon the rabbit fence near Mr Hayes’ property, Hakateramea, underseclions 12andlSPublic Works Act 1889. —Permission was granted. From Messrs Duncan and Cotterill, solicitors for Mr Allan McLean, asking the Council to give Mr McLean a title to a closed road through 8.8. 19925, 33920, 3792.—As none of the councillors remembered anything of the transaction the Clerk was instructed to look the maltter up. From Measou and Marcbant, stating that they had completed the flying survey of the proposed water-race at Waihao, and that the estimate would be before the council at their next meeting.—Received. From Mr D. McFarlane, Hakataramea, asking to have the track from Te Akaterama to Black Forsst made passable.—The overseer was directed to get the work done. From the secretary of the Timaru Harbour Board, in connection with levying harbour rates.—lt was proposed by Councillor Manchester and seconded by Councillor Hardie, “ That this Council approve of the alteration Sought for by the Timaru Harbour Board, re collection of rates, subject to this Council having the right to fix the time for striking the rate, same time as the County ’.—

Carried. From the secretary of the County Councils conference, forwarding copies of resolutions passed Councillor Olliver proposed, and Councillor Milne seconded, “ That the report received from the Conference of representatatires of County Councils and Hospital and Charitable Aid Boards, held in Christchurch on April 26th be received.” —Carried. Councillor Murphy proposed and Councillor Maopherson seconded, “ That in future all repairs to main and county roads and bridges be charged to the general account in accordance with Section 145 of the Counties Act, 1886, and that the opinion of the Council’s solicitor be obtained as to the roads and bridges throughout the country which are “ main and county ” ones.—The, motion was put to the meeting and lost. Mr Maopherson was authorised to sign cheques in place of Mr Rhodes resigned. It was resolved that Messrs Manchester, Murphy, and Oliver, meet the overseer at the Waihao bridge on the 9th May with a view to making suggestions concerning repairs, and report to next meeting. The following tenders were received Contract No- 35, metal at Otaio.—J. McGimpsie, £7B 15s Od (accepted) ; M. Foley, £B4 17s 6d ; T. W. Crone, £B7 lls 8d; 0. Y. Clarke, £95 ; F. Werges, £lO3 5s Od. Hardie, £BS 6s Sd. Contract No. 127, forming Gordon’s Yalley road.—O.V-Clarke, £lssl2slid (accepted); B. White, £165 14s B*d ; F. Werges, £215 12s 6d. The overseer’s report was read, and the following motions agreed to: —"That the overseer repair embankments on Serpentine and other roads, and sow the ■ same with cocksfoot.” “ That the overseer bring up an estimate of the cost of. proposed repairs to bridges at Pareora and Main Eoad for consideration at next meeting.” " That the overseer take out ary old culverts as suggested, and have fords made in their places.” Accounts amounting to £715 14s 4d were passed for payment, and the council rose.
