The twentieth annual sports meeting of the South Canterbury Amateur Athletic Club

was commenced on their grounds yesterday. The weather was showery and very cold, and the attendance though said to be well up to former years, was but fair. The ladies attended in fairly large numbers, and took great interest in the sports. The ground arrangements were of the usual excellent character, reflect-

ing much credit on Young, the caretaker, and the track itself was in fine order. In the

absence of such fliers as Reeves, Shaw, and a few others, none of the records suffered ; in fact the time made for the events was very

slow indeed. The competition for the majority of events was poor, and the ladies especially must have been terribly disheartened

to see only four men do battle for their handsome trophy. The result of the day’s sports showed that Morrison and Kalaugher are running one another very closely for th e championship. The noted long distance runner has three firsts to his credit, and Kalaugher has two firsts and a second in the running events, and a first and second in the jumps. Morrison is not quite up to champion form just now, for of course he has his Sydney trip in view, and it would never do to get cherry ripe thus 'early. The other successful man donned racing gear for the first time yesterday, and being lucky not to meet first flight men, carried off some good prizes. He runs well but is hardly class enough for Reeves or Shaw. Of the other competitors but little need be said here. Q. E. Rhodes has a nice style in stone putting; H. G. Bristol can still give any one yards in the throwing branch of his favourite game ; Mendelson did well in his first open attempt at jumping, and 0. E. Smith appears to be getting much quicker on the walk, though his style is anything hut pretty. It was rather a disappointment to many that Temple did not break the record in the vaulting, thus showing, as a gentleman remarked, that he had vaulted to his limit and could do no more. Kalaugher, also, in the pole jump, though clearing 9ft easily, could not gain the standard which it is said he has got over in practice. He is a fine pole jumper, his only fault being that he gets the pole too close to the bar. The running long jump was one of the most interesting events of the day, and in it Mendelson, another “ colt,” got a well deserved win. The various officials worked heartily together, prominent among them being Messrs S. A. Bristol, T. Teschemaker, H. Ford, and A. E. G. Rhodes, and Mr O.N. Orbell was as usual a most efficient starter. The judges had a fairly light task for once, the ICO yards being the only close finish. • As the Club’s secretary Mr F. W. Jones, who had by the bye at previous gatherings ably assisted Mr Olulee, yesterday for the first lime appeared before members, and he is_ to be complimented on the able way in which he carried out his duties. Mr D. McQuinness had a booth on the ground, and found business as brisk as could ■ be expected under the circumstances of weather and attendance.
