Tenders are invited for the extension of a sewer for the Timaru Hospital. Mr Wm. Hodge, of Timaru, has applied for a patent for a railway stop block. Che s.s. Wakatipu will leave for Brisbane via Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland on Tuesday sth November. As the birthday of the Prince of Wales will this year fall on a Saturday, the public offices of the Government will be closed on Monday, the 11th November, in all parls of the colony excepting in the Province of Canterbury, where, by special request, Friday, the Bth, will be observed as the holiday, instead of Saturday. A man named Wilson met with a painful accident in the Waiau district last Friday night. He was riding across country, and rode into a wire fence. His horse was pulled I up, and he was thrown upon a standard, the rough upper end of which was forced nearly through one of his legs. Says the Wanganui Herald : --It is the opinion of a gentleman well-known here in financial circles that the purchasers of Mr Buckley’s Bank of New Zealand shares have a good case against him for the recovery of their money, on the ground that he sold with 1 a knowledge that the purchasers could not have, though probably without actual misrepresentation.

A Blight shower foil during the night, and the morning shy gave some promise of more rain during the day, but the low clouds rose and broke up before noon, making a nice afternoon for holiday makers, and continuing the already too long dry spell for the district generally. As an indication of the manner in which steamers are superseding sailing vessels in the Anglo-Australasian trade, may be mentioned the fact that, according to a Melbourne wool report, of 23 vessels leaving Australasia for London with wool aboard during the month ended 11th inst, all but 3 were steamers, taking from 1000 to 14,000 bales each. The three sailors were from New Zealand. The Chinese evidently believe that there is something in a name, for one of them, a settler at Otaki (Wellington) has dropped his Celestial cognomen and taken that of William Smith. William has got into print through submitting to the 'Evening Fast the first strawberries of the season. That journal adds : It is only four months since the last of the season were submitted to us by Mr Boss, of Lambton Quay. There are not many | places in the world where strawberries are ripe eight months out of the twelve. The “ Picturesque Atlas of Australasia ” Publishing Company, which has now completed its large work, has figured in a number of actions in the Sydney courts of late for the recovery of overdue subscriptions to the Atlas. In one case tried in the District Court, before Judge M'Farland, the defendant pleaded that the book as delivered was not the same as the sample copy exhibited to him before the signing of the contract. The specimen was bound in half cloth, whereas the copies supplied had only paper covers, and they were much larger J n size than the specimen copy. His Honour decided that the parts delivered were far better than the specimen, and gave a verdict for the amount claimed. In another action the defendant denied the signature to the contract, and His Honour, after getting him to sign his name on a blank sheet of paper, declared that the two signatures were written by the one man, and the plaintiff obtained a verdict with costs. At the Parramatta court similar actions were brought, and the result, as in Sydney, was a verdict for the company in every action. These particulars will be of interest to Few Zealand subscribers.
