Sydney, Oct. 31.
An ammonia cylinder at the Pyrmont ice works exploded last night; the chief engineer, Bourn, had his head blown off, and three men were half suffocated with the escaping gas. SCULLING MATCH.
The sculling match between Stephenson (he oarsman, and McLean,
of Richmond, for £IOO a aide, took place yesterday. Stephenson led for the first mile, when McLean, who was in grand form, caught him, and won by four lengths. Time—2ltnin. 54sec.
IMPOSING MASONIC CEREMONY, Adelaide, Oct. 31.
The Earl of Kintore, Governor of South Australia, was installed Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Masons by Lord Carrington. The celebration was made the occasion of an imposing ceremony.
DOUBLE MURDER BY AN ESCAPEE.
Brisbane, Oct. 31.
An escaped prisoner named Flick, who was called upon to surrender, resisted and in a struggle which ensued he shot Constable Wovill and a boy dead. He was not captured. R.M.S, KAIKOURA. Hobart, Oct. 31. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Kaikoura arrived at seven this morning, and sails for New, Zealand at daylight to-morrow.
