AUCKLAND, June 12

Charles Wilkinson, convicted of larceny of books from the Free Library, was sentenced at tho Supreme Court to-day to three years’ penal servitude. The steamer Sowona, which was overdue at Manakau, is now safe in Makai harbour. The Gairlocli, from New Plymouth, arrived at the Manakau to-night having been windbound on the coast curing a gale since the beginning of tho week. Another phase of the volunteer embroglio which has arisen through tho misconduct at tho Easter encampment is that Lieutenant Kcising, of tho Wuiteraata Navals, has been placed under what is technically termed arrest, as it is assorted that ho showed disrespect to the captain of las corps in not forwarding through him certain correspondence sent to tho Brigado office.

A number of cases for breaches of the Beer Duty Act came before the Resident Magistrate this morning. Generally they were brought against licensees for neglecting to deface stamps when drawing beer from casks, but one was for assaulting a Customs official at a brewery. The decision in each case will be given on Saturday morning. Up to date 350 members have joined the union of tailors, tailoresses, and pressors, lately formed here.

Messrs G. Hart and J. Anderson, senr., sat to-day at the Provincial Chambers as a board of reviewers to determine the assessment of Iho Midland Railway Company’s properly in New Zealand for the purpose of property tax. Mr George Harper appeared for the company, and Mr Joynt for tho Property Tax Commissioner. The board ultimately decided that the net value of tho properly liable to tax after allowing for £SOO exemption should stand at £190,700 14s 8.1. A meeting of bootmakers’ operatives tonight refused to withdraw their last two loiters to Messrs Toomer Bros., which that firm insist upon. The other proposal, therefore, was not considered, as a majority of the men determined not to temporise with that firm. The men will therefore remain on strike. Tho majority against temporising or considering proposals was 10. The Charitable Aid Board to-day discussed the proposal to send the orphanage children to the Government school, Lyttelton, if the Board of Education persisted in refusing to provide a teaching staff. The motion was lost by one vote. Subsequently it was decided that a deputation wait on the board at next meeting, and discuss tho whole question with them.

DUNEDIN, June 12.

The triangle plebiscite resulted in a two to one vote against the diversion. Only half the ratepayers voted. At a meeting of the city council a letter was received from the Auditor-General, returning the balance sheet, and stating that he disallowed a sum of £1228 13s 7d, transferred in excess of authorised limit from gas to general account. At the same time ho says : —“ I felt it my duty to place in the hands of the Crown Prosecutor the question whether councillors hare not incurred penalties imposed by the Act for overdrawing the amount of the borough fund at the bank.” 'J he letter was referred to the finance committee.
