Waimate Borough Council.

A meeting of the Waimate Borough Council was held on Monday evening. There were present His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), and Councillors H. Watts, Forsbrook, Sinclair, Jones, Cameron, and A. Watt. Correspondence as follows was read and considered: —

From Mr T. Eichmond, asking for a refund of a certain proportion of his license fee, as he had lost the license and three months of the time were unexpired. It was decided that the council could not entertain Mr Bichmond’s letter. From Mr M, H. Call, stating that he had tested several wells of water from the houses in which typhoid fever had occurred, and in two cases the water was unfit for use. In the other eases it was quite good. From Mr J. Grant, Timaru, giving prices for kerbing.— Received. From Mr E. H. Lough, asking for the council’s contribution to the South Canterbury Charitable Aid Board.—Amount passed for payment. From the inspector of nuisances, giving his monthly report. —Bead and received. From I)r Stacpoole, reporting on several cases of typhoid fever. 'ln reference to this matter, his Worship the Mayor read a statement, and recommended the council to go in for a proper water supply as he thought it would do away with a great deal of sickness. He suggested that the council should gat a written estimate for a scheme from Mr Dobson.

Councillor Forsbrook thought that it was a good thing to go in for water. He had seen in a paper lately that gas could be manufactured from water at a cost of 4d per 1000 feet. If this was so, he thought they should go in for an estimate for a water supply at once.

Councillor H. Watt would like the matter to stand over as a notice of motion.

His Worship did not agree with Councillor Watt. He thought that an estimate of the work should be obtained.

After considerable discussion it was de. ided to let his Wor.-hip’s motion stand over as a notice of motion until next meeting. Councillor Jones wished to know if the county council had power to grant licenses for slaughtering if they had no by-laws. The Mayor replied that if they had by-laws, and he thought they had, they had power to grant licenses. Councillor Forsbrooke wished to know if the lamps were kept alight according to contract. ;he Mayor replied that on the nights mentioned in the schedule the lights had not been lit. It was resolved that the contractor be written to, informing him that the conditions of the contract had not been kept, and that his deposit would be forfeited for any further b each of tho contract. Tenders for the metal contract were opened asunder:—T. Crone, £3l 11s 6d ; B. Williams, £37 11s 8d ; M. Thyne, £39 7s lOd ; M. i-Janders, £39 19s lid; James Fogarty, £43 3s; D.
