HUNTING.

THE MEET AT TBMUKA. A cloudy sky and northerly wind greeted the master of the South Canterbury Barriers and his gallant pack on arrival at Temuka on Monday last. Punctual to the appointed time, 11.30 a ra , a move was made towards Winchester, some expressions of regret being made at this, as the Timaru contingent, who mustered up pretty strongly, were in hopes the trysting ground might bo near the Arowbemia Hotel, not only because of the distance from town, but every person knows ho may expect a good day’s sport in that favourite locality. However, after arriving at the Major’s hotel, the master placed himself in the' hands of the worthy ex-master of the Geraldine Beagles, who took him to the paddock at the back of tho Winchester Hallway station, where a hare was at once put up, and the sound of tno merry music, ■which had not been heard for so long, was welcomed heartily by some 40 people on horseback besides several in traps. The hounds on account of the strong nor-’wester blowing, could not settle to work, and the hare making for the lower swamp on Mr Francis Barker’s farm, wore whipped off and a move made towards the settlements. Hounds were not long in finding, and after a very good run through Mr Inwood’s paddocks, took a straight lino, through Mr Longloy’s across the railway line on to Mr Arthur Barker’s bridge. The wind by this time going down scent greatly improved and a rattling good run of 50 minutes ensued, m #iq)i pais? ujust be given to Fowler for the ray

ho handled his hounds. The hare, closely pursued made through Messrs Kenncly’s, McLeod’s, Louoh’s and Eicskin’s properties, corner of lower road and through Mr Ensor’s wool works, where, getting closely pressed, she doubled straight back again, and the hounds threw up in the plantation. After a few judicious casts Fowler had the satisfaction of finding puss neatly coiled on the railway line, and being put up by old Rockwood and Madcap away she went for another round almost over the same ground, and again into the plantation, where she could not elude her pursuers— a kill being the result, after a very good run of quite an hour. On account of tbc great distance away from town the master wisely decided to make a start for homo, one and all, taking the weather into consideration, being thoroughly pleased with the day’s outing. On the way back the visitors were hospitably entertained by Mr Barker. Among those out and riding were noticed, the Master on Mr Jingle, the huntsman on Selim, and Whip on Rocket; Miss Allen on Blneboy, Miss Lovegrovo on Doctor, Mrs Macdonald on a roan, Miss Macdonald, Miss Leo, Messrs HunterBrown on Kingbird, Barker on the old veteran Marquis, (who went as well as in days of yore), R. Allen on Johnny, Gordon Wood on Antigone, White on Eidelweies, B. Macdonald on Jack, also Messrs Bullock, Lindsay, Ensor, and tv/o sons, Wareing and son, Cunningham, Rooney, Collins, Stewart and others. There were several spills during the day, but none of a serious nature. The Master was for the first time this season introduced to mother Earth, but was at once up and going again, every one being well pleased to sse him remount so quickly.
