Mr Edward Chapman baa been appointed a lieutenant of the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, bis commission to date from July 18th, 18S8.

The Hon. J. B. A. Acland and Messrs G. J. Dennistoun, J. Pithio, A. G. Ilawdon, and R. Irvine are gazetted as tho members of the Scotsburn Domain Board, with the usual powers over a domain of 50 acres.

Committees of the Geraldine and Ashburton County Councils met at the Upper Rangitata bridge tho other day and agreed that £IBO should be spent on protective works on the south side. Tho cost will be divided between the two counlies.

Yesterday at the Temuka Resident Magis. trates Court, before C. A. Wray, Esq., R.M., judgment went by default in the case of J. W. Miles v. J. L. Cook, a claim for £2 15s 2d. Costs were allowed. Mr Aspinall appeared for the plaintiff. There was no other business.

The boom in the flax trade has directed the attention of the ingenious amongst us to the improvement of the processes for preparing phormium fibre. A Gazelle of the 6th contains among the lists of patents applied for, notices of the lodging of specifications of two new machines and one new process for dressing native flax.

Under the District Railways Act 1877, notice is given in the Gazette of June 6th, that the Point Elizabeth Railway Company (Limited), intend to apply to the Governor under the 20th section of the Act named, for leave to construct a railway about 7 miles and 10 chains long from llawhera Quay, Greymouth, through certain blocks of land in the Grey and Cobden survey districts, to Point Elizabeth.

The annual meeting of the Pareora Licensing Committee was held at the sehoolhouso, St. Andrews, on Saturday last. There were present —Messrs A. M'acphorson, B. Clissold, and B. Stowell. Mr A. Macpheraon was elected chairman of committee. The application of Mr Charles Weddercl for renewal of his publican’s license of the Masonic Hotel, St. Andrews, was granted. The police report for the quarter was read, and considered highly satisfactory. The meeting then terminated.

At a meeting of the Southland Education Board on Friday last, at Invercargill, members resolved to cordially agree with the reasons given in the resolutions adopted by the South Canterbury Education Board ( setting forth the injustice caused by calculating payments to the Boards on the “ strict’ instead of the “ working ” average, and to respectfully request Dr. odgkinson and the other Southland members to use their influence to restore the " working ” average as the basis on which capitation grant should be made.

A football match took place in the Domain, Geraldine, on Saturday afternoon last, between the Ashburton-Kakaia and the Waihi Football Clubs, The former was captained by Mr J. Fooks, and the latter by Mr T. Hart. The weather was most favourable. The visitors were, however, overmatched, although they played a very plucky game, which was played in two spells of 45 minutes each. L. Shallard kicked off for Waihi, and ajjter the spell Fooks kicked off for Ashburton. Eventually Waihi w r on by 7 goals and 7 tries. Of the visiling team, Fooks, Jameson, Simpson, Bruce, and Hugoning played well, and T. Halt, Fitzgerald, W. Stewart, McLeod (2), A. Shallard, and F. Shallard for Waihi. Messrs Dickson and H. Smith umpired for Waihi and the visitors respectively, and Mr J. L. Flint was referee. The Hawera correspondent of the 'Evening Post informs that paper that a portion of the Catholics there, on hearing of the Premier’s intended resignation of the portfolio for Education, telegraphed to Archbishop Redwood asking him to inform tbs Premier that bis promises regarding aid for the education of Catholic children were unfulfilled. It will bo in tiie recollection of many readers that at the last general election Archbishop Redwood and his clergy used their utmost endeavours to secure the return of Sir Harry Atkinson and his party. Mr M'Guiro, who opposed the Premier for Egmont, was denounced by the Catholic clergy at Hawera for supporting the present national system of education. It will now be seen what Archbishop Redwood will be able to do on behalf of those Catholics who up to the present have patiently waited in the hope that something substantial would bo done for them. The following is the telegram referred to : “Bis Grace Archbishop Redwood, Wellington. Sir H. Atkinson, being Minister for Education, wo will feel grateful to your Grace if you will urge him to fulfil the promises made before the last general electiou. We subscribe ourselves, your Grace’s most dutiful children.”

At a recent meeting of the Melbourne j Chamber of Commerce a letter ;:as read from the Dunedin Chamber suggesting that as a large gathering of commercial men was expected at Dunedin during the currency of the exhibition, towards the close of the present year, it might be a suitable occasion fora second congress representing the chambers of commerce of Australasia, and asking the opinion of the council on the question, and also whether they would be willing to send delegates to the congress if held. The secretary was directed to reply that it appeared to tho council of tho Melbourne Chamber to be rather an early data for another congress upon the very recent gathering in Melbourne ; but that if it was the general feeling amongst the chambers That advantage should be taken as suggested of the occurrence of tho exhibition at Dunedin, the Melbourne Chamber would do what might be found possible to assist in making it a success. The Imperial Rink, at Waimate, has been drawing crowded houses for tho last throe nights, the attraction being Miss M. Sylvester, the champion lady skater of the world, who appeared on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. flhe management are to be congratulated upon Laving obtained the services of so talented a skater, and the large audiences showed their appreciation of Miss Sylvester’s clever performance. The dancing, and rinking backward or forward, came quite naturally to her, and the skating on half skates, a difficult feat, was very nicely done. The fire act is also worthy of mention. In it fifty lighted candles are placed upon the floor two feet apart, the skater then performing a variety of different styles of skating in and through them, in different directions, with an ease and grace which astonished tho audience. Altogether tho performance was a very successful one.
