In sympathy with the late rise in the price of sugar in the Home and Auckland markets, the local grocers have found it necessary to alsojadvance the retail price a little. An employee of the Timaru Gas company started to day to shift some of the gas lamps in the Main Bead in accordance with a report of the work committee adopted at last meeting of the Timaru Borough Council. The shifting involves a good deal of cutting up of the asphalt which it is to bo hoped the foreman of works will have properly relaid. The Gratitude accordingly arrived in the harbour on Saturday. It is stated that the vessel is to be searched and her papers examined. Tho Customs authorities are reticent on the subject.
