Ou Thursday evening last Mr J. Aitkeu 8.A., gave a most interesting lecture in aid of the funds of the Literary Institute in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Geraldine. Mr H. W. Moore occupied the chair. There was hut a small audience. The subject chosen was, “ Water,’’ which tho lecturer handled in a most able manner.

At (he Baptist Church to morrow evening the Rev. 0. C. Brown will take as his subject, “ A blind prophet who could see through, the disguise of a Queen, and announced to her heavy tidings,” Our readers will we are sure be glad to learn that the Rev. W. Gillies, who has been seriously ill for several days now, lias taken a turn for the better, and that every hope is entertained that he will soon be able to leave his room.

The Geraldine members of the Waihi Football Club had a practice in the domain on Thursday afternoon last. Sides were chosen by Messrs Millard and J. J. Hiskens, there being ten a side. After a capital game Hiskens’ side won by 12 points to 1. A special meeting of the Titnaru Mechanics Institute committee was held in the library last night for the purpose of considering the replies to a circular lately issued concerning a fancy dress ball. The members present were Messrs M. White (in the chair), Eaymond, Virtue, Knubloy, Merchant, Bamficld, P. P. White, Eutland, Harney, Wilson, Cullman, and Gillman. A large number of replies were received, only two or three of which were unfavourable, the rest promising liberal support. The following gentlemen were appointed a committee to make all necessary arrangemenls : —Messrs Knubley, Bamfield, P. P. White, Eaymond, and Merchant. The committee were unanimously of opinion that the ball will be an immense success. Some discussion took place as to a proposal to get up an opera, in aid of the funds during the month of October, It was decided not to proceed with the matter at present. At the Waimato Eesident Magistrates Court yesterday, before his Worship the Mayor, MrP. Slee, and Mr J. Manchester, J.P.’s, Alexander Frew was charged with being drunk in a public place on the previous day. An application was made by Sergeant Gilbert for a prohibition order forbidding the sale or supply of intoxicating liquor to the defendant for twelve months, on the ground that ho was injuring his health by excoeeive drinking. A fine of 20s was inflicted, or 24 hours’ imprisonment, and a prohibition order issued as applied for ; copies of the order to be served on the licensees in Waimato borough, Deep Creek, and Makikihi licensing districts, and to the licensee of Waihao Forks Hotel. One of the most successful meets of the Waimato County Harriers this season was held at Mr F. M, Eickman’s Eeaerve Farm, near Waimate, on Wednesday last. A breakfast was provided at Mr Eickman’s homestead, after which the hounds were taken to the reserve about two miles distant. A hare was soon started, and led in the direction of the town, whore she was run into near Mr John Manchester’s house. The fences were very close together, and the jumping was good. After another short run the hounds were whipped off and taken back to the homestead for the night. About 40 horsemen and several horsewomen attended, and all were well satisfied with their day’s outing, and especially with the hospitality of their host and hostess.
