The s.s, Tainui is now four days overdue. 1 (Received 9 p.m., Juno 3rd.) DESPERATE .STRUGGLE BETWEEN A BURGLAR AND A POLICEMAN. THE POLICEMAN SHOT, Sydney, June 3. A desperate affray took place in Macleay street at an early hour this morning between a police constable and a burglar, during which the former was shot. It appears that at about three o’clock this morning Constable Sutherland, a native of New Zealand, who was on duty in Macleay street, saw a burglar making off from a house which he had successfully entered. On the policeman attempting to arrest him a severe struggle took I place. At last the burglar, whoso name is Morrison, seeing that ho was being worsted, drew a revolver and shot Constable Sutherland in the groin. The wound caused the latter to let go his man, but before doing so he struck the burglar a terrific blow on the head with his baton, Morrison then made off, but was captured later in the day. Constable Sutherland died about three hours after being shot.
