(Bv Telegraph. ) CHRISTCHURCH, June 1. A trial of Whitney and Eley’s ammunition took place at Bromley range to-day in the presence of Colonel Lean and several volunteer officers. Tho result was satisfactory, the general opinion being that there is practically no difference between the two kinds. At 200 yards the average for five shots was 19— 11.16 points for Eloy, and 17J points for Whitney. At 500 yards the average was for Eloy 14J points, and for Whitney 13J points. MASTEETON, June 1. An elderly woman named Chiltendon felj into a fire last night in a fit, and had an arm and thigh badly burnt. WELLINGTON. June 1. The date of receiving tenders for the mail contract by the direct steamers to London closed yesterday. Only one lender was received that being a joint one from the Shawffavill and the Albion Companies. A large boarding-house situated at Pipitea Point, occupied by Mrs Manton, was burnt down shortly after 5 o’clock this evening. The insurances and origin of the fire are unknown. DUNEDIN, June 1. Henry Crust, of the New Zealand Express Forwarding Company, was fined a nominal penally for consigning cartridges by rail without marking the package containing them as dangerous. Though this was the first case of the kind heard in the colony, the department intimated that all similar casss would be prosecuted.
