The Committee of the Mechanics’ Institute are canvassing for assistance in arranging a fancy dress ball in aid of the funds of the Institute. This may be thought an odd way of raising funds for a literary institution, but it would most likely be successful in attaining the end sought by the committee. Fancy dress balls are certainly not more out of keeping with the character of the object to be assisted, than fancy bazaars in aid of churches. The committee deserve Tsupport, for they are really trying to improve the institution. The proposal to reduce the subscription was not considered by the subscribers present at the last annual meeting to be sufficiently promising, and perhaps it would not have answered. The Welling- ( ton Athemsutn management hayc lately adopted Yogellian tactics. They have added 1000 volumes to their collection, to be paid for in three years. A large addition to the library of our institute would no doubt be followed by an increase in the number of subscribers. Would tfce Vogelliau system succeed here P
