MYSTERIOUS DEATH.
(By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON. June 1. A death so far surrounded by mysterious circumstances occured at Upper Kaiwarawara last night. Mr Thomas Hawkins, a wellknown settler who lived in the district named, left town at five last night and was found at eight o’clock lying dead on tho branch road which leads to his farm. The body was lying at full length and bore marks of violence on the neck and his vest was considerably torn. Nothing is known of how deceased came by death but it is supposed that he either fell or was thrown from his trap and that the horse kicked'him or the wheel passed over his body. Dr Cahill, who examined the body, says that death resulted from hemorrhage of the jugular vein, but he declines to express an opinion on bow the wounds were caused until he makes a post mortem examination this morning. Lucky Escape of a Guard. (By Telegraph.) DUNEDIN, June 1. James Millar, guard of the South train fell out at Caversham Tunnel, bub escaped unhurt.
