(By Telegraph.) WELLINGTON, Mat 31. The Government have received by the San Francisco mail from Professor Long a Jfull report on the management of dairy factuiies. The report, which will bo extensively circulated throughout the colony, is now in the hands of the printer, and will be published in pamphlet form. Thomas Hawkins, an elderly man, living at Kanorawara, was found dead on the road half a mile from his home, this evening, with a hole under his ear and bleeding. Be had been thrown from a trap which was found some distance off. He leaves nine children. Captain Charles A. Humphrey, Assistant Under Secretary for Defence, has been appointed a Colonel in the New Zealand Militia. Iho Hon. Major W. D. H. Bailie has been appointed Lieutenant-Colonel. The former appointment has given rise to some comment. The Evening Post characterises it as little less than an insult to many other officers who have much better claims to promotion. NELSON, Mat 31. The Bishop of Nelson’s house at Bishopdale had a narrow escape from fire at four this morning. The fire began in an ashbox and set fire ti the substructure of a water tank. This was burnt and the tank fell, waking a servant. There was plenty of water and the fire was put out in less than an hour. Very little damage was done. CHRISTCHURCH, Mat 31. Mr B. W, Humphreys, a candidate for Christchurch North, addressed a large meeting in St. Luke’s school to-night and received a vote of confidence. He announced himself a supporter of the present Government; in favour of a reduction of members to 70, but opposed to the formation of small charitable aid districts. He accepted the present customs tariff, but reserved the right of considering any proposed alterations therein on their merits. Lodge Canterbury, 1048 E. 0., to-nijht carried a motion in favour of an United Grand Lodge for the colony by a substantial majority.
