South Canterbury Times. THURSDAY, MAY 30, 1889. NEWS OF THE DAY.

A good many men were engaged napping bluestone on the market reserve yesterday. The metal when ready will be put on the roads as directed by the council’s foreman of works.

Notwithstanding that the weather was fine and the sea calm, the dredge Taniwha was idle the greater part of yesterday. This was duo to the fact that her staff was busy on the tug. The Eev. Mr Isitt arrived from Christ- | church yesterday, and delivered a lecture at the Wesleyan church last evening on “ Norman Macleod.” The evening being a fine one the attendance was very fair. The lecture, which has now become a popular one, was greatly enjoyed, and at the close Mr Isitt was very cordially thanked. We are requested to supply an omission in our description of last Friday’s issue, of the new Catholic Church at I’leasant Point. It was therein stated that the site, an acre and a half, was given by Mr Sullivan. The omission was, the somewhat important one, the committee properly think, that no mention was made of the generosity of the New Zealand Land Company, from whom the site was purchased, The company reduced the price by so much that they practically contributed £45 to the church. The gentleman who gave us the information from which our account of the church was compiled, was not aware of this, or forgot to mention it. The harbour board’s tug Titan was floated off the slipway at three o’clock yesterday afternoon, the full spring tide, and calm sea being very favourable for the work. The slipway worked very satisfactorily, and not the slightest hitch occurred to mar the launch. The Titan was altogether about 14 days on the slip, during which time she bad been most thoroughly overhauled. Her hull has been repaired in three places, by the rivetting in of three lengths of plates; the riba abaft the boiler have been strengthened; the boiler itself has been repaired, and the whole of the ship has been well painted. In fact, the Titan is in such order that she ought to do excellent work for a very long time. Yesterday we published a cablegram stating that fierce resistance was being offered to evictions on the Olphert estate. In a Home paper, of April 12th, wo find in the Parliamentary report, under the heading “ Evictions in Donegal,” that Mr Balfour, in answer to Mr Sexton, said he understood the number of evictions to be carried out on the Olphert estate was 23, although the number of houses involved was 66. He was informed that there was a fund for supporting the tenants driven out of their holdings through the Plan of Campaign in January last. He believed tint the tenants had paid their rents into the " war chest,” that if the Plan of Campaign were abandoned a settlement might easily be arrived at with the landlord, and that it was the promotion of the Plan of Campaign which was responsible for the misery which had been and which might be inflicted upon the [ district.

The statutory mcctiEg of the Waimato Borough Council was held ou Tuesday, the 28th May. 1 here were present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Mitchell, A. Watt, Cameron, and Jones. The meeting was called to receive the balance-sheet for the year ended 31st March, and consider the auditor’s report thereon. His Worship explained that he had gone through the accounts, and that the Auditor-General had passed them as correct, and that no exception had been taken to any of the items. After a few questions had been asked about the accounts the following resolution was passed : “ That the statement and balance-sheets bo signed by the mayor and published, in accordance with the Act." The meeting then terminated.

A writer in a Napier paper gives the following example of how school examinations have for years past been conducted in Hawke’s Bay in every department of school work, and says the system is actually recommended to teachers :—“ We will suppose the subject to bo spelling in the lowest standard. Inspector: ‘ Thomas Jones. Now, Tommy, can you spell apples ?’ Tommy (confidently) —‘ A-p-p-l-e-s.’ Inspector (with affected surprise): 1 What ? Do you spell apples with two p’s ?’ (Scornfully to the next boy.) ‘He spells apples with two p’s ! ’ (Coaxingly.) ‘Now you tell him.’ Next boy (Sammy), brightening up at the inspector’s evident opinion of his superiority over Tommy as a speller : ‘ A-p-l-o-s.’ Inspector (sarcastically, patting Sammy on the head) : ‘ Clover boy! ’ (General laughter of the class, and collapse of Sammy, with a feeling of inexpressible disgust.) Sammy is now so hurt and disheartened by his undeserved discomfiture and disgrace that he loses all interest in the further progress of the examination, and in brooding over bis wrongs allows himself to be badgered into uttering all sorts of absurdities; becomes the inspector’s butt, and though probably a boy of average ability, poor Sammy is put down by his tormentor as an unmitigated dunce.”
