DEATH OF MADAME SULLIVAN.

It was with deep regret that members of the Catholic Church, and the public generally, heard early yesterday of the death of Madame Sullivan, lady principal of the Catholic girls’parochial school'. Four weeks ago Madame Sullivan was seized with apoplexy, the attack being of such a nature that serious consequences were not apprehended. However, on Thursday evening she took suddenly worse. Dr Mclntyre was summoned, but his skill was of no avail and Madame Sullivan, rapidly sinking, breathed her last about 11 o’clock on Thursday night. Nows of her death was received with the deepest grief by the sisters in the convent, by the many girls attending the school, their parents and friends. Over nine years have now elapsed since the deceased lady came from Chicago to Timaru, along with other nuns, to take charge of the Convent of the Sacred Heart at Timaru. On arrival Madame Sullivan was given charge of the girls’ school, and, with the assistance of two sisters, conducted it in the most able manner. A highly accomplished woman, a born instructor, a gentle yet firm disciplinarian, entirely devoted to her work, Madame Snllivan was a teacher in a thousand, and her death means a great loss not only to the Roman Catholics but to to the whole town and district. To her friends her death gave a veiy painful shock,as it was so unexpected and both they and the deceased lady were looking forward to many years yet of good work, as Madame Sullivan was only 43 years of age. The funeral will take place on Monday, and will be conducted by the Bight Rev. Dr Grimes, assisted by all the priests in the district.
