Another meeting of White’s creditors was held to-day, when the debtor for the fourth time failed to put in an appearance. Extraordinary allegations were made as to White’s conduct before entering the Bankruptcy Court, and the crcditars resolved to assist in any prosecution which might be undertaken against him for obtaining money under false pretences. MV W. S. Kelson has been appointed a director of the South British Insurance Company. Mr Connolly, the American Consul, declined to become a member of the committee for the reception of the Irish delegates, on the ground that the policy of the American Government forbade it.

WELLINGTON, May 23

The party who accompanied the Minister of Mines to the Stewart’s Island tin fields have returned here, and the Slut' has an article to-nigbt containing a very discouraging report. The 25 men on the ground seem to be doing nothing, and the indications are not at ail hopeful. The Lodges in Dunedin have approved of the Grand Lodge movement. The Minister of Juatico has directed that enauirics should be made into the case in which the son of a respectable citizen of Auckland was brought before a private sitting of the Resident Magistrates Court in that city on a charge of larceny from his employer. The Court of Appeal will sit for delivering judgments on Saturday. Mr Crawford, licensee of the Central Hotel at the Lower Eutt, was fined £5 and costs and his license endorsed, for permitting billiards to be played after hours. A large and influential deputation waited on the Premier this afternoon, urging the Government to grant an endowment for establishing a University College in Wellington. Several speakers pointed out the necessity of such an institution, and the setting aside of a certain reserve and endowment, as otherwise all available Crown lands would shortly be taken np. In reply the Premier said that when in office he had always favoured the establishment of a college in Wellington, and when in opposition all his sympathy was with it. Government, however, had an unpleasant duty to perform in curtailing expenditure, and Parliament was in an economical frame of mind. He ridiculed the idea possessed by a large number of colonists, that secondary schools were for the benefit of the rich. Without consulting his colleagues he could not speak decidedly as to the action of the Government, but if they could see their way to make a representation to Parliament in the direction suggested by the deputation, he would be only too pleased to do so.

Mr Menteath, member for Te Arc, addressed bis constituents at the Opera House to night, and was accorded a vote of thanks.

Brown’s offer at a certain price to place a cataract pump and Brown’s patented washing appliances on the ground. Within very few months the necessary money will be remitted through the company’s bankers. Joseph Taylor, who is now having Lis beach claim properly opened, is getting remarkably good gold as far as he has gone. Certain alterations in the machinery have to be made. The Midland Railway Company are calling for lenders for (ho Ahaura section, which is about six miles in length. CHRISTCHURCH, May 23. Mr John Clavier addressed a largo meeting of Christchurch North electors to-night, and received a vote of confidence. He announced himself a follower of the present Opposition, in favour of protection, opposed to centralism and the Hare system. But little festivity has been prepared for the Queen’s Birthday. A volunteer review will take place in Hagley Park in the morning. The Synod, after a long discussion, and without carrying any motion, adjourned to June 4th to receive the report of the committee appointed to consider the church (property question. WAIMATE, May 23. Some time between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning a combine and elevator, the properly of Messrs Forrest and Qeddes, were burnt to the ground. Nothing was saved. The mill had been shifted to somewhere near Tavistock on the previous day. There was no insurance, so that Messrs Forrest and Qeddes will bo losers to the extent of £3CO.

DUNEDIN, May 23.

The Anglo-Australian collection of oil paintings which was intended for tho Melbourne Exhibition but arrived 100 late, and is now exhibiting in Sydney, has been secured for tho Dunedin Exhibitiou,on tho same terms as the British Loan collection.

Oniv £513 is now required to complete the capital of £15,000 for the exhibition, and steps are to bo taken to raise that sum in a few days. Applicants for apace are coming in freely, and it is possible that it may bo necessary to curtail applications which may come in later.
