The Marquis of Salisbury addressed a great meeting of the Primrose League at Her Majesty’s Theatre last night. In the course of his speech the Premier said that the most remarkable political phenomenon of the day was the manner in which the home countries were becoming Tory in proportion to the lowering of the suffrage, and that victory was steadily inclining to the Loyalist party in Ireland. THE VICEROY OF IRELAND. At a meeting of Irish Peers a motion approving of the abolition of the office of Viceroy of Ireland was approved of. NEW ZEALAND MUTTON. The Indian Government are deputing officers of high rank to organise the forces offered to the Imperial Government by the princes of the Punjaub for the defence of India. MASONS’ STRIKE. Berlin, May 20, Three thousand masons have struck for higher wages, and a reduction of the hours of labour to nine hours per day. A MEETING OF KINGS. The steamer German Emperor, 587 tons, of London, collided during a fog in the Channel with the steamer Beresford, 1415 tons, of West Hartlepool. The German Emperor foundered and twenty lives were lost. CRICKET SCORES. Lohmaun, the cricketer, playing in the match Surrey against Essex, scored 115. Shrewsbury, playing in the match Sussex against Notts, scored 104, THE NAVAL DEFENCES BILL. The Naval Defence Bill has now passed all its stages in the House of Commons. ACTION AGAINST LORD SALISBURY. Mr William O’Brien, who' is bringing an action for libel against the Marquis of Salisbury, in consequence of statements may by the Premier in his speech at Walford in March last, lays the damages at £IO,OOO. An application will be mad© for a change of venue to Manchester.

JUDGMENT CONFIRMED. The judgment in the case of Yagliano Brothers has been affirmed by the full court. Note. —ln November last Yagliano Bros-, merchants, of Old Bond street, London, recovered £71,000 from the Bank of England. The action arose out of the Geyka frauds in 1887. Geyka, who was a clerk in the Bank, forged bills on the firm for the amount mentioned, and was sentenced to ten j ears imprisonment for fraud. PUGILISTIC. Joe. Thompson, the well known Australian bookmaker, who is at present visiting England, has written to Slavin, the Australian pugilist, advising him to pay a professional visit to England. Thompson stated that he is confident engagements can be made for Slavin which will yield him £2OOO in gate money.
