Who was responsible for “ fixing tbe levels ” of the streets of Timaru in such a way as to require a portion of a sound street to be torn up, at considerable expense merely for the purpose of lowering the surface a few inches ? A piece of folly of this kind is in band now. A piece of George Street opposite tbe Post Office has been ripped up, to lower it by a foot or so. The street was well enough, no one bad complained about it, a single foot taken off a rise of that height can hardly bo noticed, and was not worth taking off. With much really necessary work to be done in the town, it is simply a waste of the rates to spend them in accordance with a paper idea, instead of according to the actual necessities of the town. If there is any statute requiring tbe streets to be formed to “ adopted levels,” then make those fit for the streets, not these the levels.
