Another Lady’s Invention.

Mdme. Supple, of Mew York, must, according to the Sewing Machine and Cycle News, hare struck the sympathetic ear of a Mew York reporter, judging from the following, which appeared recently in a daily contemporary of that city, under the heading, ‘An Important Invention.’ One of the biggest little inventions of recent date is the slotted shewing machine needle, a patent for which was taken out a short time ago by a woman seventy years of age. It does entirely away with the old process of threading by twisting the end of the thread to a fine point, and thrusting it at the needle’s eve, until by some chance it happens to strike the mark. This new invention in domestic economy has a bevelled slot in one side of the eye, through which the thread slips as easily as a nickle drops into the slot of a weighing machine or a lung tester. A blind old grandmother need not have the slightest difficulty in sewing now. Nothing could be simpler than the slotted needle, and all who see it wonder why it was not thought of years ago. The inventor told me the other day that it cost 30,000d01s to make the experiments which resulted in producing precisely the kind of slot which, while readily admitting the thread to the eye, prevents it at the same time from slipping out in the operation of sewing. What a boon this will be to our mothers and wives may be easily realised when it is understood that one sewing machine company alone in Mew Jersey turns out every month, over 2,000,000 needlos.
