Timaru High School.
In the absence of the chairman, the Yon. Archdeacon Harper, who was unavoidably compelled to be in Christchurch on business connected with the Diocesan Synod, Dr Lovegroveand Mr William Sims, acting as a deputation from the High School Board of Governors and attended by the secretary, yesterday formally inducted the Eov. George Hogben, M.A., to the headmastorship of the Timaru High School, After prayers had been read, Dr Lovegrovo in well chosen words addressed the school, bidding the teachers and tho pupils to receive loyally at his bands, as the representative of the board, the now master appointed to take over tho school, and introduced Mr Hogben as the choice of the board, commending him as a highly qualified gentleman and a thorough scholar, and ashing
them all to accord to him (he attention and respect which had been ever characteristic of the pupils of the Timaru High School in their relations with the headmaster.
On the conclusion of Dr Lovegrove’s address the boys loudly applauded, and received Mr Hogben with every mark of welcome and approval. Mr Hogben briefly replied. He said that the work before him was congenial wwk, that it was to him a labour of love, and all he expected was an effort on the part of those under him to enable him to realise the hope with which he commenced his career as headmaster of the Timaru High School. He bid them all remember that a boy’s or girl’s school days should be looked back upon as among the happiest days in their lives ; and that it would bo his aim to win their confidence, and so lead them aljng flowery paths to knowledge and self-respect. Mr Hogben then thanked the board, through its representatives, for the confidence it had reposed in him; and promised that no efforts should be wanting on his part to retain that trust, and to endeavour to make the Timaru High School in all respects worthy of its past in the estimation of the public, as well os in the success of its students. The deputation then withdrew, and the second term of 1889 was forthwith commenced.
