A COMPLAINT.

[To the Editor of the S.C. Times ]

Sib, —In the present depressed state of the labour market, ought not/ any work being done to carry a full complement of hands ? Is it right and proper that one man only should be at work oa a job where there is room for at least four ? The Timaru Harbour Board is at present doing a job where one man monopolizes all the work. Why so ? Would a contractor, if he had the work, do it with one man ? Seeing so many men walking about the streets, with their hands, and knowing their is work to be done, one wonders at the cause. By inserting, in your valuable paper, the above few lines for the purpose of drawing the attention of the board to the matter, when I am sure it will bo remedied. I am &c, Observer. Timaru, May 21st, 1889. [ft depends what sort of job it is. The Harbour Board will act as a private individual would in such matters, and there are few men who would divide a small job among four men if one man could do it equally well and time were no object. Why did not “ Observer” say wbat job ho meant, and really draw the board’s attention to it ? —Ev.s.cr.]
