The Reign of Syndicates.
The year of our Lord A.D. 1889 will, says the London correspondent of the New Zealand Times, he written in history as the commencement of an era of syndicates. Trade has been depressed so long in Kngland that an immense amount of money is lying idle for the want of remunerative investment.. Big minds are searching for an outlet of capital on a big scale, and so enormous syndicates are proposed. One ring have an idea of dealing in soap, and it is seriously thought of buying up all the soap factories in Britain. The paper-makers are following suit and the brickmnkers in the north of Kngland have amalgamated, and are working matters with a high hand. But the biggest thing in syndicates is the coal ring. It is proposed to raise a capital of one hundred millions. The scheme was thought to result in a greater economy of management and an improvement in the market price. There are signs that this big thing will not come to a head. The coal mine owners in the north of England fight rather shy of it, and although a short time ago they were considered safe to join, they are gradually withdrawing their support.
